“Tibataje”
Aural affections of the Canary Islands
Opening of the sound installation, which will be open to visitors until Saturday, October 18.
Cube Room | CIC El Almacén
Free admission
TIBATAJE is an immersive multichannel sound installation that explores the sound ecologies of the Canarian archipelago from an expanded, embodied and deep listening, attentive to the vitality of life forms and more-than-human materialities. The project arises from a process of artistic research and fieldwork in seven of the islands, including recordings made in the exclusion zone during the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano on La Palma.
Using multiple ways of listening and phonographic techniques that traverse air, water, soil and other sensitive materialities, the work enters into a vibrant web of matter and energy, attending to that which is located on the margins of perception and attention. Thus unfolds a sound flow where the expressions of the wind, the ocean, the earth, the vegetation, various animal species and human action are intertwined.
The installation presents a spatial sound composition, without images, which is conceived as a shared space of intimate and prolonged listening, where each person is invited to actively participate through their listening, understood as a form of presence and co-creation.
Listening is considered here as a relational, sensorial and potentially transformative practice: a form of active and situated attention that integrates the bodily, the mental and the affective.
Beyond conventional approaches to the “soundscape” and idealized visions of “nature”, TIBATAJE adopts listening as a creative, political and ecological act, aimed at resisting dominant ways of relating to the world and cultivating less anthropocentric ways of feeling, thinking and inhabiting.
TIBATAJE is presented for the first time, in an unprecedented way, at the Lanzarote Visual Music Festival.
Collaboration in artistic research and production work: Palma E. Christian Martínez.
Special thanks to Timanfaya National Park, Teide National Park and Garajonay National Park, and to volcanologists Poly Carracedo and Vicente Soler (IPNA-CSIC), for facilitating the field work.
With the support of the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C., which made possible part of the fieldwork on which this project is based.

METTE HENRIETTE
Jameos del Agua
15€
The collaboration between Norwegian saxophonist and composer Mette Henriette, pianist Johan Lindvall and Australian cellist Judith Hamann results in contemporary chamber music that defies labels and moves between avant-garde jazz, free improvisation and modern classical music. Their approach is deeply introspective and textural, with meticulous attention to silence and space.
Together, this trio creates a distinctive sonority where Henriette’s saxophone often sings melancholy, suspended melodies over the meditative accompaniment of Lindvall’s piano and the complex resonances of Hamann’s cello. Her music is an invitation to deep listening, revealing subtle patterns and surprises in a constant flow of tones and textures, often with an almost cinematic quality. It is an exploration of musical intimacy, where every note and every silence carries significant weight.
——-
Mette Henriette is a Sami-Norwegian composer, improvising saxophonist and conductor working in a variety of creative disciplines. With an attraction to the unknown, her early years were forged through diverse experiences, from her studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music and the School for Improvisational Music in New York, to musical travels in Tajikistan and West Africa.
Her ECM Records debut, Mette Henriette (2015), is a double album of original music for trio and large ensemble, produced by Manfred Eicher. The release received international acclaim and The Guardian described her as “a rising star of contemporary music.” Her second album, Drifting (2023), was named Best Album of the Year by DownBeat.
Touring internationally for over a decade, Mette Henriette has performed at venues such as Barbican Hall, Berliner Festspiele, Dark Mofo, documenta14, Flagey, Moldejazz, Musée d’Orsay, Oslo Opera, Ultima International Contemporary Festival, Rewire, Riddu Riddu and the Atlanta Jazz Festival. She herself creates the lighting design and set design for her live performances, sculpting a spatial and visual dramaturgy in dialogue with her music.
His orchestral cycle Overture I-III (2020) was commissioned by the Oslo Philharmonic and premiered under the baton of Klaus Mäkelä. Each of the three works can be performed individually or as part of the complete cycle. They have since been performed by The Hallé at The Bridgewater Hall and the Norwegian Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. He has also composed a work for string orchestra for the Arctic Philharmonic, premiered inside a coal mine in Svalbard, along with chamber and solo pieces for Cikada and violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing.
Mette Henriette has collaborated with renowned artists such as Marina Abramović and Nicolas Jaar, and in 2023, she was a mentor at the Montreux Jazz Festival Residency.

BUGGE WESSELTOFT, ARILD ANDERSEN, SANSKRITI SHRESTHA
Jameos del Agua

This will be a unique evening of experimental jazz with a trio of virtuosos redefining the boundaries of the genre. The incomparable Bugge Wesseltoft is joined by legendary double bassist Arild Andersen and innovative percussionist Sanskriti Shrestha to present a repertoire that fuses the established with the unexpected.
When these three musicians come together, the result is a rich and diverse sonic experience. The innovative mind of Wesseltoft on keyboards, the solidity and depth of Andersen’s double bass, and the rhythmic and textural percussion of Shrestha’s tablas, intertwine to create a musical dialogue where the boundaries between acoustic jazz, electronics, improvisations and world music influences are blurred.
This concert is not only an opportunity to hear original compositions by the trio that are part of Wesseltoft’s latest album, “AM ARE”, but also to revisit standards by Bugge Wesseltoft and explore material by each of these extraordinary musicians.
This collaborative work promises an evening where improvisation, melody and tradition meet the avant-garde, in an unusual trio format that promises to surprise and move.

Bugge Wesseltoft is an influential Norwegian pianist, keyboardist, composer and producer, recognized worldwide as a key figure in the evolution of contemporary jazz and the creation of the “nu jazz” or “future jazz” sound beginning in the mid-1990s. Wesseltoft remains an active creative force, constantly seeking new forms of musical expression and redefining what jazz means in the 21st century.
Arild Andersen is undoubtedly one of Europe’ s most influential and respected jazz double bassists since the early 1970s. His career, spanning more than five decades, has established him as a mainstay on the international jazz scene. Recognized with numerous awards and honors, Andersen remains a vital figure in jazz, demonstrating inexhaustible creativity, an infectious groove and a deep connection to tradition and the avant-garde.
Sanskriti Shrestha is an innovative tabla player and composer of Nepalese origin. Her musical career is distinguished by her ability to fuse the rich percussive tradition of India and Nepal with the sonorities of jazz, electronic music and contemporary improvisation. In addition to being a virtuoso percussionist, she is also an imaginative composer who constantly seeks to build bridges between the old and the new, the Western and the Eastern, the composed and the improvised, making the tabla a key instrument in the contemporary music scene.

THE LAST AND FIRST MEN
Buñuel Room : CIC El Almacén
3.00€
“The Last and First Men” is a singular, posthumous film by acclaimed Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who we were lucky enough to enjoy one of his last live concerts at the 2017 edition of this Festival.
Known for its approach closer to an audiovisual art installation or film essay than a traditional narrative, this film was released in 2020, two years after his death, and is his only feature film as a director.
Loosely based on the science fiction novel of the same name by Olaf Stapledon (1930), the film is a profound meditation on evolution, decay and the ultimate fate of humanity, two billion years in the future. The central premise is a message that the last human civilization, on the brink of extinction in the distant future, sends to humanity in the present.
“The Last and First Men” is a work for deep listening and contemplation. It lacks dialogue, linear plot or the physical presence of human actors. Instead, it invites the viewer into a sensory and philosophical experience about time, memory, extinction and beauty in ruin. It is a moving testament to Jóhann Jóhannsson’s artistic vision and one of the most original and daring works in recent science fiction.

SHIDA SHAHABI
Jameos del Agua
15€
Swedish-Iranian artist Shida Shahabi performs in concert to reveal the immersive atmosphere of her acclaimed and most recent album “Living Circle”. Known for her ability to create soundscapes that touch the soul, Shahabi transcends labels with music that falls somewhere between neo-classical, ambient and experimental electronica.
“Living Circle” marks an evolution in Shahabi’s sound, taking the intimacy of his debut “Homes” into more expansive, orchestral terrain. His compositions, often born of improvisation, unfold slowly, revealing layers of deep textures, ethereal drones and the soulful presence of instruments such as piano (his lead instrument), cello, double bass and, on occasion, celestial choirs.
Live, Shida Shahabi’s music is transformed into an immersive experience. It is not a concert for noise, but for deep listening and contemplation. Her pieces, with extended durations, invite the audience to let themselves be carried away by the tides of sound, to immerse themselves in atmospheres that can be melancholic, hopeful or of desolate beauty. It is a unique opportunity to experience the subtlety and emotional strength of one of the most singular voices in contemporary music, in an evening where every note and every silence has a purpose and a profound impact.
——-
Shida Shahabi, born in 1989, developed an early interest in music, which she complemented with art studies at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm from 2009. After graduating, she worked as a freelance musician and began composing for dance, film, theater and art.
His debut album, “Homes” (2018), was critically acclaimed, followed by the EP “Shifts” and various collaborations, including a reinterpretation of Beethoven. He has also composed soundtracks for short films such as “Lake on Fire” (2020) and “Alvaret” (2021), as well as for the feature films “Lovely, Dark and Deep” (2023) and the award-winning “Falcon Lake” (2022).
In 2023, he released his second album, “Living Circle”, which combines classical and electronic elements to create atmospheric compositions. That same year, he composed the music for Halla Olafsdóttir’s dance piece “Sylph”. Shahabi has also participated in major live events, such as Max Richter and Yulia Mahr’s Reflektor festival.

LAJALADA
Cave of the Greens
10€
LAJALADA is the solo project of singer and songwriter Belén A. Doreste. Born as a natural evolution after her time with Bel Bee Bee, the project makes its way between the author’s electronic music and the most intimate song. Today, LAJALADA enters a stage where it unifies the acoustic and the handcrafted creation with the developments, processing and sonorities of the electronic world in a purely landscape conception.
In this new stage, LAJALADA presents himself solo, integrating guitar, pads, loops, acoustic and electronic percussion and voice as a narrative line. The proposal focuses on music as soundscape and expressive core never at the mercy of a specific form, enriched by electronic textures that amplify its scope without losing its intimate essence.
A Lajalada concert is an invitation to a sonic journey where tradition and avant-garde meet, offering a unique and contemporary vision of the Canarian musical roots through an electronic and experimental lens.
